Kate Jones

Sowmitri Tarimala received his B. Tech degree in Chemical Engineering from JNTU College of Engineering, Hyderabad, India in 2002 and a Ph. D. in Chemical Engineering from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX in December 2006.  His doctoral research, under Prof. Lenore Dai, involved the study of oil/water emulsions stabilized by colloidal solid particles, also known as Pickering emulsions, using Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy.  His dissertation was directed towards investigating and understanding the self-assembled structure of solid particles of varying size and wettability, and the in-situ aggregation and dynamics of solid particles at liquid-liquid interfaces.  One of his publications on this research was highlighted on the cover of the peer-reviewed journal Langmuir in 2004. He was also actively involved with the International Textile Center, Lubbock in modifying the surface of cotton fabrics using sol-gel chemistry and developing an antibacterial coating and improved UV radiation protection to the cotton fabrics. 

Sowmitri came to LANL as a summer intern in July 2006 and worked with the Weapons Technology-6 group, before moving to the radio geochemistry team in October.  In the beginning of 2007, following his graduation, he became a post-doctoral research associate and currently works with Amr Abdel-Fattah.  His current research interests include investigating colloidal interactions with various surfaces and interfaces under acoustic stimuli, attachment and detachment kinetics of colloids on patterned surfaces, micromixing phenomena in microfluidic devices, and surface wettability studies.
