Cindy is currently a PhD student in the Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Department at the University of New Mexico. Cindy started at Los Alamos National Laboratory in July 2001 as a Post Baccalaureate working on the Busted Butte Project under Jake Turin, Armand Groffman and Laura Wolfsberg. She has been a graduate research assistant with the Geochemistry Team under mentor Paul Reimus since July, 2002. As a part of her graduate research, Cindy has developed a semi-batch process to study the long-term desorption of uranium and neptunium from alluvium. The process utilizes batch sorption to saturate potential sorption sites with a radionuclide tracer and a subsequent flow process to desorb the radionuclide from the alluvium. The data obtained from this method is used to study in detail the range of desorption rate constants for radionuclides desorbing from alluvium, which in turn can be used to study the kinetically controlled mechanisms of sorption and desorption of radionuclides in heterogeneous materials. This research can improve our understanding of subsurface fate and transport of radionuclides at long distance and time scales and increase confidence in laboratory studies to accurately describe field transport behavior
